Swelo – Smoke: The Master of the Sultry Melody

Up and coming Urban Pop artist Smoke has recently released a R&B Jazz infused beat that is pretty much as easy as breathing. The cathartic grooves of the track almost have a hypnotic affect as you drink in the stylised sultry ambience behind the beat. With so much soul behind Swelo’s music, it was really no surprise that he hails from New Orleans.

The fluidity of the vocals is like nothing I have ever heard before, which may sound like an overstatement but God damn, give the emerging artist credit where credit is due. The vocals get switched up throughout the mix to treat you to lucidly deep crooning and soft tempo rap bars.

The beat to Smoke came alive through an experimental mix of acoustic instruments and digital effects, yet no sound hit you harder than the brass which sat iridescently brighter than any other arrangement in the mix. There’s also a stunning instrumental breakdown which you can look forward to which draws Smoke to a captivating close.

The Katy – Livelihood: Jazz-Driven Urban Contemporary Pop

Every once in a while, you’ll stumble across a track that you never knew you needed in your playlists. Livelihood is the latest single from a Cleveland, Ohio based trio who infuse sounds from a myriad of genres to prove that there ARE new directions for music to take.

Their instrumental arrangements are nothing short of genius, and as for the vocals, if they don’t move you, then I’d be worried that you’re a little dead inside. Vocalist, songwriter and bassist Cathalyn has an overwhelmingly sultry vocal style which adds the perfect layer of harmony to the already viscerally sensual track. If all that wasn’t enough; the guitar riff which helps to draw the track to a close won’t fail to leave you in awe of the guitarists deftly melodic prowess.

I’ll never tire of hearing the haunting yet tantalising notes of an organ gliding over soulfully contemporary urban pop mixes. Yet, the up and coming, prodigally pioneering trio the Katy utilised the lucidly ethereal instrument in a way like I’ve never heard before with their funk-fuelled, Trap-driven urban offering of soulful Pop.

Teresa Taylor – Glow: Jazz-Soaked Urban-Hyped Pop

Fitting very loosely into the Pop arena, Teresa Taylor’s latest single Glow shows us just how iridescent her style is. I can’t say I’ve ever heard such rhythm behind a Pop track, the groove and grind flows through the verses right into the chorus where you’re treated to decadently amplified swarms of sensual energy. Her R&B Soul approach to Pop puts to shame every artists that is currently producing plastic, generic beats in the hope of being played on the radio amongst all of the other indistinguishable artists. It’s safe to say Teresa Taylor stands out by a country mile.

Her powerfully sensual vocals won’t fail to capture your attention, in fact they won’t even let you go once the track has drawn to a close. Every element of the track sat at the perfect pitch to allow you to drink in the ethereal energy which went into the production. The multi layered beat utilised digital and acoustic elements to create a Jazz soaked, Urban-hyped anthem which is so much more than your average ballad.

Glow was Teresa Taylor’s first single released this year, you can check it out for yourselves over on SoundCloud now.

Georgee Landy – Time to Listen: Dub-Drenched Urban Pop

https://soundcloud.com/georgeelandy/time-to-listen

No one, absolutely no one does Grime Rap bars better than London based artist. Georgee Landy has joined the talent pool with his latest mix Time to Listen which is a complete mix up from what you would hear on the mainstream. I’m sure he won’t thank me all too much to saying I found his Rap offerings absolutely adorable, but I’m running with it anyway. He has the same enigmatic charisma behind his vocals and lyrics as shared by Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys with an urban style that Turner could only dream of possessing if their latest album is anything to go by.

Time to Listen is rhythmic, it’s monumental and it’s produced to absolute perfection. The melodic bars rise above over the harsh kicks and snares of the ingeniously off beat rhythm.  I can guarantee by the second spin of this track you’ll be singing along to the infectious chorus.

You can check out Georgee Landy’s latest Dub drenched Pop track out for yourselves over on SoundCloud now. Any fans of Dub, Grime, Reggae and Ska will be in heaven with this mix.

Willborch – Upgrade: Pensive Pop with an Urban Twist

As far as I’m concerned, there will never be enough Hip Hop Pop crossover tracks on the radio waves. Which is why I was stoked to hear Willborch’s latest single which was released June 8th, 2018.

What I’ve always admired most about Hip Hop tracks is the ingenuity which goes into the lyricism, the pure flow and the rhythm contained within the hype of the fluid bars. Which is exactly what you get with Willborch’s standout single Upgrade. A lot of people still find that as a genre Hip Hop is inaccessible but Willborch may just be the artist to bridge that gap and allow audiences with a penchant for Pop to delve in the soundscapes. How he managed to create a beat so haunting yet upbeat and polished I will never understand. The sentiment behind Upgrade may be a little morose, but it’s hard not to get caught up in the hype of this lyrically astounding single.

Paytra ft. Troubletime – Hater: Empresses of Empowering Urban Pop

Haters, we all have them, yet not everyone can make a dope anthemic Hip Hop Rap track about how absolutely infuriating they are which turns out as prowling, domineering and quite frankly genius. Paytra teamed up with Troubletime to create their anthemic Pop hit Hater which could without doubt rival Taylor Swifts Shake it Off. Remember the meme ‘name a bigger badass than Taylor Swift?’ Now I can definitely name two more that knocks her further down the Pop pedestal.

I absolutely adored the fact they challenged chauvinistic perception by declaring they made their own beats behind Hater, and what amazing beats they were. The urban inspired Trip Hop licks lay down the perfect platform for the vocalists to lay down their organically astounding lyricism. With plenty of hooks and drops around the weaving, thrashing and sweetly synergetic track hits you with it’s infectiously good vibe feel.

You can check out Paytra’s latest track Hater featuring Troubletime which was released on April 8th, 2018 on YouTube now. Go on, stick it on your playlists, with Hater in your musical arsenal you’ll never have another bad day.

LaShonda Schofield – Wash That Man: 90’s Urban Pop Fans Prepare to Rejoice for the Revival

LaShonda Schofield has just released her 2018 single Wash That Man. As soon as I hit play on the track I was hit by a wave of Nostalgia after finding the reminiscence between LaShonda’s style and the iconic Pop artists of the 90’s such as Destiny’s Child and TLC. No one seems to make music like that anymore. Apart from LaShonda Schofield.

It has to be said, the track gets off to a fairly weak start with a rather drawn out use of non-lexical vocals before she kicks into the first verse of her new track Wash That Man. Yet once the high-vibe beat kicks in there’s no looking back, only forward through the swirls and drops of the Jazz inspired Urban Pop beat. To create a visceral contrast between instrumentals and vocals the beat sits neatly behind the vocal-led track. I’m pretty sure there has never been a more ingenious track written about washing your hair.

So, for anyone looking for a nostalgic Pop fix, head on over to Spotify where you can soak up LaShonda’s soulfully empowering vibes.

Miki Montebello – Post-Op. ft Dallas James: If Neo-Classical Compositions & Urban Pop Didn’t Go Together Before, They Certainly Do Now

If music doesn’t make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, it’s not really worth listening to is it?

After checking out Miki Montebello’s latest single Post-Op from his album Blanco Tigre the rest of my playlists just seem mediocre now. Whilst I’m not the biggest Pop fan, when it’s mixed up with Old School Jazz and Hip Hop beats there’s no sweeter sound. As soon as the riffs, licks and frills of the piano, kicked in I felt the catharsis brought through the sweetly angelic cacophonous keying. In parts, it was hard to pay attention to Montebello’s vocal over the top of the Neo-Classical effect that Montebello somehow paired with an Urban Pop beat over the top. In vocals to Post-Op there’s a sweet rhythmic Jazz Pop crooning sensibility, yet, Montebello clearly doesn’t like to conform to genre boundaries when he’s producing music.

You can check out Miki Montebello’s latest single Post-Op ft. Dallas James on SoundCloud now along with the rest of his 14 track album Blanco Tigre.

HAZLEWXXD – When It Rains: Grab Your Umbrella For This Muted Melodic Trap Anthem

https://youtu.be/ruw7rg_5GfA

When it Rains is the brand-new track from HAZLEWXXD from the Urban Pop artists new EP ‘5 AM Somewhere’. The Trap style beat is blissfully balanced between melodic and mid-tempo meaning that this track isn’t an attack of over-hyped sounds, it rings with a subtle veracity to match HAZLEWXXD’s vocal style. The tentative pacing to When It Rains against the slightly subdued deep lyrics makes this track a perfectly harmonious anthem with the perfect amount of bite. The Texas based producer doesn’t hang around putting out new mixes; since his release of 5 AM Somewhere he’s released yet another EP ‘ScrapMetal vol. His latest releases prove the diversity of his gritty sound as he ventures across to the Alt Rock arena with tracks such as Pain Killer, the bassline is hypnotic with a slight reminiscence to other Alternative artists such as Nine Inch Nails and The Prodigy in a more muted, reminiscent way.

HAZLEWXXD’s EP 5 AM Somewhere is now available to download and stream across all major platforms, or you can check out the official music video to When It Rains on YouTube
