Prom Night Perm – Young Rob Lowe: A Synthwave Ode to an Icon

Young Rob Lowe by Prom Night Perm

To fully appreciate my excitableness behind this review, I’ll probably need to make the admission that I was one of the many people to fawn over Rob Lowe. So, when I stumbled across Prom Night Perm’s latest Alt Electro Synthwave single “Young Rob Lowe” which was released on July 12th, it was never going to fall flat on my ears.

Upon hitting play and getting a sonic blast of 80s synth Pop as the vocals lusted after the charisma Rob Lowe, every assumption I had about the track manifested as an aural euphoric delight that goes beyond endearing – which is by in large due to the sweet searing riffs which carve their progressions over the melody on the keys. Young Rob Lowe is a track which I definitely won’t be forgetting about in a hurry; it’s a guilty earworm that demands repeat attention.

Panda Plane – .Shadow. Experimentally Progressive Synthwave

If it doesn’t feel like a track has taken you on an epic journey, is it even worth listening to? I wouldn’t say so.

Whilst drinking in the deftly stylised chaos of Panda Plane’s latest single .Shadow. it was hard not to feel as though I had traversed through a medley of different tracks, the amount of progression which is packed into the five minute duration was astounding. From a prelude not too dissimilar to what you’d expect to hear on a Top Gun soundtrack to midway through when you’re treated to the swampy synthy hooks that pad out this conceptually genius single, In Panda Plane really doesn’t leave you wanting for more, especially when you take into what was by far my favourite element of the track; the instrumental breakdowns. As .Shadow. draws to a close, the digital effects digital effects were stripped back, and the guitar drove the sound along side the intricate complexity of the drum breakdowns. The Lo Fi Emo vocals may not be for everyone, but there’s no disputing that for .Shadow. they just work.

Low_passing’s synthwave track ‘In Control’

anti sophrosyne by low_passing

If you’re anything like me, you need an excuse for why you’re afraid of carousels and other carnival attractions. For these occasions, I point to songs like in control by low_passing. There’s little other way to put this: this song nails creepy abandoned amusement park aesthetic better than mostly anything in recent times. It would be the perfect theme for a Mr. Robot character’s evil lair or perhaps a spooky level in a video game as you approach the boss encounter.

Starting with a cool, suspenseful breathing is just the ticket to raising neck hairs and preparing you start walking a bit faster…and faster…and start sweating a bit…and faster until you’re at a dead sprint and make it out only to look back and hear the same chilling breath in the outro. The word chilling has never applied so well to chillwave music. Could this be the start of a hybrid between synthwave and witch house? Only low_passing knows what’s to come, and this track will leave you anxious to find out.
