‘Snakes’ starts with a delicious little solo keyboard part, before Sweet Roddy’s vocal kicks in in a wash of East Coast auto-tune, the ‘snakes’ refrain separate from the verse, and defined by it. The lyrics tell of a cheating girlfriend. It’s an age-old tale; boy meets girl, girl hooks up with another guy for ice-cold drinks in the club, girl sends other guy photos…you know the story.
Musically, it’s pretty chilled, laid-back trap; instrumentally, there’s a Yelawolf vibe, maybe a little Post Malone, the main vocal front and centre, the chorus more sing-song and lyrical. It’s poppy, pretty of-the-moment, kind of melancholy and posturing all at once. Isn’t that an age old story, too?
