Protest Hip Hop

Sydney’s hip-hop heavyweight, T.C.W, will force heads out of the sand with his juggernautical alt-rap track, DAMN I AM U

T.C.W’s latest alt-rap juggernaut, DAMN I AM U, hits so hard you will be torn between shedding tears over the atrocities elucidated and responding to the call to arms by following suit, standing up, and fighting back against the relayed injustices rather than leaving tyrants’ blood pooling in our hands.

DAMN I AM U is a formidable force that proves our sanctity may be more comfortable with our heads in the sand, but we’re sleeping through history that is doomed to repeat if we see resistance is futile. The track begins with a harbingering outro of war horns, reminiscent of the epic scores in Game of Thrones, yet infused with a tribal edge which echoes the annals of Viking folklore. The intro sets a high bar, and TCW surpasses it with his dynamic and raw rap bars that reach the pinnacle of tensile conviction.

The instrumentals go beyond the usual rhythmic hip-hop tropes with their possession of a dark indie post-punk and progressive rock quality, creating a backdrop that amplifies TCW’s fervent lyrical delivery; it’s the ultimate anthem for seeking vindication for their contemporary angst and nihilism.

T.C.W’s lyrical prowess reflects his intricately intellectual depth, reminiscent of artists like Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole, while also nodding to his New York influences like ILL Bill and Vinnie Paz. His self-taught production skills shine through, marking ‘DAMN I AM U’ as a foundational piece in his journey towards creative greatness.

The track’s vocal performance is a rollercoaster of emotion, starting with a low, anticipatory tone before exploding into a passionate outcry, mirroring the passions of a modern revolution.

Edword Evwrit wants to talk to us ‘Right Now’

Hailing from the Bay Area, California, Edword Evwrit is a solo hip hop artist, as well as a member of both Liquor Mouth and Lunaclick; ‘Right Now’ then is a delicious slab of old-school hip hop, funky and grooving, with a deep, deep pounding bass and a pretty little closed hi-hat pattern keeping everything ticking. At times it’s reminiscent of De La Soul, at others that questioning call-and-response rap style that Eminem does so, so well. There’s moments of ‘The Real Slim Shady’ here, mixed with little bits of ‘Three Feet High and Rising’ and Cube’s ‘Today Was A Good Day’.

Evwrit’s got some gorgeous flow, little double-rhymed couplets, some of the syllables cut up and spat bullet-like, others drawn out and rhythmic, with multiple rhyme patterns and a cute little semi-psychedelic drop at around the two-minute mark making ‘Right Now’ a cut above the average modern hip hop release; Evwrit’s rhyme patterns and intelligent wordplay, coupled with cracking backdrop instrumentation and arrangement, make this a stand-out track. You should check it out. Right now.

Hear ‘Right Now’, and the rest of Edword Evwrit’s album ‘My Brothers And Me’, on Spotify. Follow Evwrit on Facebook or here.

UK Hip Hop Producer GieoSound energises the airwaves with their latest drop “Na Na Na Na!”

It is an incredibly rare occurrence for true personality to shine through in Hip Hop, but after hearing GieoSound’s latest release Na Na Na Na! I feel like I know the artist and producer well enough to invite them over for a cup of tea.

With the track which dropped on October 27th, the UK-based artist and producer put a brand new spin on the frustrative and aggressive tracks which have been created during lockdown. It’s a work of feisty defiance, but with the lush warm soft tones and GieoSound’s playfully enigmatic approach to production, you can’t help but feel a little endeared and reassured that no matter how bleak things seem, it’s all going to be okay. Even if it isn’t, at least we’ll have blazing new drops such as Na Na Na Na! to jam to as the apocalypse looms.

You can check out Na Na Na Na! for yourselves by heading over to YouTube now.

Get Adrenalized with S.C.R.D.’s Rap-Driven Alt-Rock Track ‘Mosh Pit’

I never anticipated my favourite mosh pit of 2020 would come in the form of a Rap-driven Alt Rock track, but there’s no paralleling S.C.R.D.’s relentlessly high-octane protest single Mosh Pit. It’s wittily scathing, and it packs an adrenalizing punch.

So, if you were in danger of slipping into apathy or ennui, hit play on Mosh Pit; with sirens blazing under the harshly steady Rock beats, it is electrifying from start to finish. Any fans of Wu Tang Clan and Public Enemy will definitely want to jump on this caustically compelling track which pays ode to 90s Old School while serving up the antidote to our 2020 misery.

I may not be covered in the sweat of strangers and left bruised, but I’m galvanized all the same. More than anything, I’m eager to see what S.C.R.D. brings to the airwaves next.

Mosh Pit is available to stream and download on all major platforms via this link.
