Sidetrack Walker – Will to Leave: Viscerally Atmospheric Progressive Neo-Classical

Berlin-based artist Sidetrack Walker has released their most captivating soundscape to date. Expect the human psyche to stare back at you when you hit play on Will to Leave which is just one of the tracks found on their latest album The Art of Starvation.

The Neo-Classical melodies perfectly capture tense, fraught and honest emotion. Under Sidetrack Walker’s deft orchestration, the progressions spill more resonance than even the most meta of lyrics ever could.

But what blew me away the most about Will to Leave was the sheer distinction. Sidetrack Walker’s tendency to pull from a myriad of genres such as Neo-Classical, Dark Folk and Prog Rock allowed their sound to spill an alchemic amount of atmospheric intensity.

8udDha bl0od – !n57.:.j.:.M: Di0nY5U5: Cinematically Dystopian Scuzz-Laden Psych Rock

!n57.:.j.:.M: Di0nY5U5 is the recently released cinematically dystopian single by Brighton-based musician 8udDha bl0od. At least, that’s how it starts.

As the aural doom starts to clear, the ring of the distorted guitars gets sharper while the energy in the mix amplifies through the tribally percussive beats which start to manifest in the mix.

With !n57.:.j.:.M: Di0nY5U5, 8udDha bl0od proved that harsh discordant psychedelic scuzz has always had the capacity to be entrancing. Who knew?

No one does progressive tracks like 8udDha bl0od. No matter how many times we delve into his Machiavellian ingenuity, we’re always left psyched. Pun intended.

Layabout – Party Man: Consumingly Alchemic Post-Punk-Laced Prog Rock

Up and coming Jamaican Alt Rock act Layabout created the ultimate teaser of a prelude in their latest single. “Party Man” is exactly how a progressive track should make you feel. It locks you into the constantly evolving rhythms leaving you with a sense of palpitating anticipation right up until you’re consumed by the crescendo you’ve been waiting for.

And Layabout definitely didn’t disappoint with Party Man which allowed Blues, Rock, and Post Punk to converge in the gorgeously immersive single.

As the sweet 80s Rock guitar notes introduce the Peter Hook-style bassline the cymbal heavy percussion follows suit and creates a rhythm as tight and dynamic as the chorus in Teenage Kicks by the Undertones. Yet, all reminiscences are incredibly fleeting in Party Man. You’ll be pulled from bouncy high vibe punk tones to glacially angular guitar work in the space of three and half minutes. Music doesn’t come much more alchemic than this.

WD-HAN – Icarus: Sultry Rhythmic Blues Meets Anthemic Alt Indie

Alchemy is bound to spill when a nuanced band set their mind to creating an aural earworm out of Indie, Blues, and Rock. WD-HAN definitely succeeded with their first single to be released in 2020 “Icarus”.

The single dropped on January 17th giving us yet another affirmation that the Tampa Bay-based artist is one to watch.

With a prelude offering reminiscences to Daughter, the sudden switch to anthemic Alt Rock in Icarus will have you on the edge of your proverbial seat. When in full swing, Icarus is a monster of a track full of rhythmic sultry Blues, yet those bluesy licks come with plenty of bite.

Even The Slept – Wake Up With Disassembly Required

Sitting somewhere between a band and a collaboration, Even The Slept also sit in some pretty unique sonic territory too. Disassembly Required may come at you like a fairly straight contemporary alt-rocker but it doesn’t take you long to get you ear tuned in to just how clever this band actually is. And it takes a certain type of band to make music that is as expressive, emotive and engaging as this, to take eloquent lyrics and create vocal deliveries that are as elegant and fluid as the instrumentation behind it. It takes a band like Even The Slept. When the age old argument regarding which is more important, the words or the music, rages around you, just make those throwing the same old clichés around listen to this album, roles are reversed or at least interchangeable, music speaks and vocals soar, lyrics become half muted riffs and guitar lines become poetry.

Even The Slept are a band who seem to emerge from the dystopian wreckage of a catastrophic collision between very expressive rock genres. Alt-rock provides the power that drives the band and progressive rock the byzantine complexities and subtle changes that form the structure of the songs. And as power is harnessed by intricacies and clever musical motiffs balance aggressive workouts what emerges is a song that covers so many bases but still retains its integrity and identity. This is a band to watch out for.

Dawn: Music From Berlin That The World Can Fall In Love With

Earlier this year Dawn (Dawn Music from Berlin) hit us with a 7 minute track that will make you revaluate every electronica track you’ve ever listened to. His ground-breaking track ‘Abyss’ reaches into your subconscious without your permission, and takes you on a transgressive road of empyreal chaos with its complex experimental and analogue sound.
The German’s certainly do have the rest of the world beat when it comes to any form of electronic music, Dawn from Berlin is no exception. He’s been creating, producing & remixing music since 2000 and has become a household name in Germany for his progressive style, dabbling with techno, electro & experimental. He’s also known for his mixing talent and has in the past worked with; Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, New Order, Mutemath and many others.

Abyss is futuristic yet reminiscent of the traditional electro style. There’s almost a ‘War of The Worlds’ sound lingering throughout the progression of the track. It’s upbeat sounds are teased with trepidation in the perpetual drone that’s present throughout the track, as it ebbs and flows with flawless breakdowns to leave you at the edge of your seat. As you’d expect with a longer track, it hits you like a tonne of bricks, the music is orchestrated with so much vivacity that it’s impossible not to become immersed.
