Paper Eros gives us a perfect latin-pop take on ‘Hate Love Me’

With what may be our favourite track title and cover art so far this week, Paper Eros is a Toronto-based alt-pop artist focusing on the relationship between domination and submission and pain and comfort, with the motto ‘Love, Art, and Rebellion’; ‘Hate Love Me’ starts with a vaguely latin-style guitar line before Eros’ smokey vocal kicks in, sultry and low, enticing and seductive all at once.

There’s a latin-pop feel to the track, that ‘Despacito’/’Bailando’/’Danza Kuduro’ vibe that’s evocative of sunny days and sweaty, sexy nights. With its lyrics of a passion-filled night, the samba rhythms, and the Latin-style instrumentation and arrangement, ‘Hate Love Me’ is a killer dance-pop song that – if there’s any justice in the world – ought to be all over the radio this summer-time.

Independent Latino Pop artist NEZZA dropped her sublimely exotic single “Corazón Frío” in February 2020; you’d struggle to find a 2020 release with the same warming vibrant melodic appeal.

The lyrics may be Spanish, but the soul poured into the track is universally resonant. The same can also be said for the rhythmically smooth, organically absorbing rhythms.

Christine – Cast Away: Evocatively Captivating Latino Pop

“Castaway” is the latest single to be released by up and coming Latino Pop artist Christine. There may be a sweet sentimentality to the track. But, there’s also plenty of evocative, and uplifting energy.

With sharp hooks to lead you into a euphoric EDM Pop chorus from atmospheric verses, Castaway is a track which offers everything you could possibly ask for. Christine’s effortlessly harmonic vocals are captivating from the first verse to the last. And the effort to make Castaway far from archetypal is just as perceptible as her nuanced vocal talent. There’s a slight 90s pop influence, but Christine is an artist in the habit of setting herself apart with plenty of distinction.

BAUGARD – A Sombra: Distinctively Captivating Alt Latino

BAUGARD

Up and coming duo BAUGARD are set to release their 6th single “A Sombra” along with their debut EP. The lyrics may be in Spanish, but the sentiment of the compelling love song doesn’t fail to resonate.

The single was inspired by the surreal feeling of reciprocal love, which is matched in absolute equality. But A Sombra also alludes to the fact that facets of love are imperfect in their purest form.

Don’t worry, there’s also pioneering beats in the midst of the poetry. A Sombra boasts complex, intricate, and distinctively striking rhythm which instantaneously piques your curiosity as you follow the un-archetypal progressions through the duration of the single. I’ve quite honestly never heard anything like the percussion contained in A Sombra. It’s tribal, while at the same time, cold, calculated, and atmospheric.

In the instrumental increments, the single infused elements of Post Punk. I didn’t expect to hear the experimentalism of bands such as SWANS from a track which kicked off with such familiar, R&B Latino tonality. But like so many of BAUGARD’s listeners, I’m here for it.

You’ll have to wait a little longer before you can check out A Sombra for yourselves. But in the meantime, you can listen to their earlier release via Spotify.

Latino Indie Rock Artist Osvy Torres Makes Their Debut with the Single “Quédate”

Whatever your perceptions of Latino music are, you may want to throw them out of the window before listening to the debut single from up and coming Indie Rock artist Osvy Torres. “Quédate” is a sublime shift from everything you’d expect from the soundscape.

While you’ll be able to hear a touch of the Latino rhythm, Quédate is a track deeply rooted in Rock. Yet, there’s plenty of dreamy reverb laid over the instrumentals to give that indulgently hazy feel commonly found in Shoegaze.

It is a soundscape filled with atmospheric anticipation for the next driving progression of the quite literally mesmeric guitar. Osvy Torres’ vocals pour plenty of soul into the mix – I may not have been able to understand the lyrics, but the emotion and passion behind Quédate definitely still resonated.
