A&R Factory Present: Janessa Evrist

The independent singer songwriter community is a very difficult one to break out of. Even though the genre has its roots in the early 1970s, it’s found a massive resurgence in the last several years amongst younger performers combining it with other styles. One of the most recent artists trying to break out of that scene is Janessa Evrist, a Los Angeles-based songwriter who sings, plays piano, and pens her own work. Her debut EP ‘Fall Apart’ is due out this year, and the eponymous single is available now. Let’s delve into it!

Evrist’s ‘Fall Apart’ is a very melancholy piece of music, chronicling her transition from feeling like a broken “work in progress” to no longer caring to bother to “pick up the pieces” of herself. Though that may sound particularly abysmal, there’s a bizarre sense of individual triumph in ‘Fall Apart,’ as if Evrist’s decision to fall apart is a decision to embrace herself the way she is. Everybody is broken in some way. Thus, having broken parts of yourself is part of the human experience. ‘Fall Apart’ recognizes that.

Musically, Evrist’s performance is especially excellent. She has a beautiful voice and her soft croons are scored perfectly by her piano performance and some sparse, but stunning percussion. The song has an ethereal, dreamy quality to it, especially at moments like the section around 2:00 when tiny echoes of Evrist’s vocals cascade about the backdrop.

The music video for ‘Fall Apart’ is surprisingly good, too, and it captures the surreal nature of the song very well. The cinematography of the video is notably intriguing, and Evrist moves through a variety of lighting set-ups from well lit bedrooms to dark forests lit with greens and blues evocative of ‘A Midsummer’s Night Dream.’

‘Fall Apart’ does cut through the noise of the singer songwriter scene, and it does so triumphantly with a fantastic production and accompanying music video. It’s well written and performed, and it’s also indicative of Evrist’s debut EP being a collection of music worth putting on your calendar for later this year.

A&R Factory Present: Viviola

https://youtu.be/FIhoQBfRAkc

Often the beauty of the independent music scene is just how remarkably eclectic and bizarre it has a tendency to be. Last week, a rising duo who calls themselves Viviola released a new single, ‘Flesh,’ that perfectly embodies that side of the indie music community. Self-described as “epic, ecclesiastical, erotic, electro,” Viviola’s music is certainly quite unique unto itself. Is ‘Flesh’ a single worth picking up? Let’s find out.

Viviola definitely hasn’t boxed themselves into a specific corner with their music style. It has pop influence, yes, but it’s heavily layered in electronic influence. Consisting of Viktoria Schöffl and Mario Wienerroither, the duo lives and breathes through Schöffl’s lead vocals. Her soft musings are the undeniable centerpiece of ‘Flesh,’ and her delicate, vulnerable delivery makes the song particularly special.

The lyricism of ‘Flesh’ does border into the erotic, as Schöffl croons about bodies becoming “matching blocks” when they connect. It’s tasteful, though, and there’s an artistry to the intimate lyricism at play here. Similarly, the duo’s stunningly shot music video complements the poignancy of the single even further. The video for ‘Flesh’ is one of the best music videos in the indie scene thus far this year; it’s very well shot and edited.

As Viviola reaches the peak of intensity on ‘Flesh,’ the listener is met with a masterful soundscape of sweeping synthesizers and heart-pounding electronic beats. ‘Flesh’ is a wonderfully produced track, certainly worth taking notice of amidst a sea of indie electro-pop artists with far more sketchy and poorly executed compositions.

Every element of ‘Flesh’ also feels meticulously organized, from Schöffl’s vocals that slowly grow in intensity to the occasional, anthemic choral harmonies the accent her in the middle of the track at the two minute mark. The music video clearly has some depth, too, seemingly showcasing Schöffl being cleansed both literally and metaphorically, naked in the shower.

There’s a lot of pop music with electronic stylings in the indie scene. It’s one of the most popular subgenres. Viviola have done something very difficult with their new single, though. They’ve created an entry in that part of the scene that actually feels fresh and different. That’s an accomplishment worth lauding.

A&R Factory Present: Joy Downer

Joy Downer is the new project from Joy Bishop and Jeff Downer, a married duo out of  Los Angeles, CA. Inspired by duality; themes of light and dark, man and woman, mind and matter collide to set the backdrop of the sound.

Their danceable debut single, “Caught In Your Spell,” is a jangle pop love song  that opens with a shimmery, dreamwave synth and is anchored by buoyant drums and groovy rhythms. All the while Bishop’s saccharine voice sings a story of obsessive intentions ending with triumphant blasts of trumpet.

“Have you ever met someone that made you dance the fine line of being a stalker and letting that person know you’re interested?,” says Bishop about ‘Caught In Your Spell.’

The song is off their debut EP, Radio Dreamer, which was recorded and produced by Rob Kolar (of He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister and KOLARS) at his home studio in Echo Park.

Alba presents her latest release titled “Life of a Bird” a song that is all about moody melodies and emotional vocals that combines the track into an epic piece of “Nordic Noir” vibed indie pop.

Anni Sinilahti, who goes by the artist name ALBA, is a singer-songwriter and producer from Finland. Her artist name was inspired by a meeting with an old man whilst travelling through Morocco, who told her that the name would bring her fortune in life. After leaving Finland at the age of 16 to busk in the streets of London, ALBA returned to her home country to work on her solo releases and write for other artists.

A&R Factory Present: Karmic

Karmic derives from the word Karma.  Everything we do or say, as human beings, has intention.  To actively be aware of yourself and how you affect others is a mindful activity.  Knowing that you have the power to be the light with how you speak is Karmic.  Pushing a friend to be his or her best is Karmic.  Living and creating with the intention of bringing people together is Karmic.  Accepting life situations as they come and having the power to be a leader through madness is Karmic.  Inspiring people to be good to each other and to work together as one is Karmic.

We are a band of musicians, artists, and life adventurers that strive to inspire people with not only our music, but our vision of the world.  We write about our lives.  We write about people we know.  We write about experiences we have had.  We hope our songs can make you laugh, cry, think, and feel.  The good and bad.

We invite everyone to experience our world, and to share positive messages in the world.  We are all in this together after all.  Let’s create art. Let’s create conversations.  Let’s paint a better picture of this world.  Let’s push to be our best.  We are Karmic, and so are you.
