Zizzo World

The build-ups and drops conceptualise the track as they embody a complete loss of control and gravity, while the vocals transform the tech house mix into a euphorically visceral anthem that you’ll want to rewind for the repeat shots of ecstasy that it effortlessly exudes.

Terez – One of Canada’s most sought-after songwriters drops new solo single ‘This City’

Fresh off the back of her recent single release ‘Hot Mess’ comes this new track from Calgary-based singer-songwriter Terez, an early 2000’s electro-pop ballad that’s all fizzing synths and multi-faceted vocals; dance-oriented, catchy as hell, and utterly relatable, ‘This City’ was inspired by Terez’ move to Toronto, and the reminiscing feelings of missing an old lover. Nostalgic and uplifting in equal measure, there’s elements of Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, or Victoria Monet in here; part pop-classic, part club-banger.

Terez is already a name in her home country, and rapidly becoming one of Canada’s most sought-after songwriters and creative directors; with a new EP due out later this year, on the basis of ‘This City’ it’s very easy to see why she’s already so much in demand.

‘This City’, and it’s accompanying video, will be released across all major platforms at the end of May; in the meantime, you can check out Terez on Facebook and Instagram.

Electro-pop duo Atomic Berries reclaim euphoria in their latest single ‘Relive the Moment’

Electro-pop duo Atomic Berries’ latest single, Relive the Moment, is steadily racking up the streams since its release on April 23rd; the raw-emotion-packed dance track was made for the dancefloor. But if you need a shot of euphoria ASAP, grab your headphones and experience the collective sense of nostalgia that inspired the single.

Through the build ups, breaks and everything in between, there’s an arresting intensity to Relive the Moment. It is so much more than your average lip service ‘high-vibe track; it captures the visceral nature of yearning for the past when the present leaves you disillusioned. If you can’t relate to that after the year that we have endured, your soul may be defunct.

With the stunning cinematic edge to Juniper’s vocals and the retro-future grooves in the mix, courtesy of producer Mike Midas, the duo will take the live scene by storm in 2021 with their grinding techno beats, synthesised crescendos and catchy lyrics.

Libby Butterworth explores femininity with her indie-pop earworm CHANEL.

CHANEL is the latest single to be released by Cambridge-hailing 21-year-old singer-songwriter Libby Butterworth who has already earned a spot on the BBC Introducing Hotlist in 2020 for her catchy, vulnerable indie-pop sound.

Hit play on CHANEL, and you will immediately see why there is so acclaim amassing around her soft feminine vocals that bring plenty of intimacy to her candid lyrical style. Your archetypal pop track leads you to believe that you are the outlier for not having it all figured out; Libby lets her listeners hear her uncertainty and internal conflict with lines such as, “I want it all and I don’t want anything”.

CHANEL flows perfectly along with the shift in the tide away from demands on pop stars to be less iconic and more humanistic. The single finds a nuanced way of saying that femininity doesn’t always come easily, and the desire to be the embodiment of Audrey Hepburn doesn’t always come from within.

Not only is CHANEL an infectiously moody indie-pop earworm, but it also has the potential to help so many women understand their own identity. Naturally, we look forward to hearing plenty more from Libby and her sultry subversive style.

Libby Butterworth’s latest single, CHANEL, is available to stream via Spotify.

Debrah Jade has released her funk-fuelled hyper-pop single, Nobody But You.

‘Nobody But You’ is the latest fierce feat of  hyperpop left on the airwaves by the breakthrough artist Debrah Jade. After racking up hundreds of thousands of streams since making her debut in 2018 with her single, ‘Drenched in Love’, Jade has stayed true to her signature funk-fuelled, disco-pop affectionate style that unapologetically reminds her listeners of their capacity to feel.

Hit play on Nobody But You, and you won’t just hear Jade’s optimistic disposition; you will be inclined to share it. We may have all collectively endured the most trying times in living history. But the presence of resoundingly visceral voices, such as Debrah Jade’s that remind you of the time when Houston and Turner were the reigning queens of pop, bring back a sense of normality.

Nobody But You is now available to stream via Spotify.

True Being playfully explores futuristic uncertainty in his latest single, Wrong Love Song.

The enigmatic masked artist and producer True Being has released his stickiest earworm yet with the release of ‘Wrong Love Song’. After helping plenty of London’s up and coming artists to find and polish their sound, True Being finally made his debut in 2020 with the release of ‘What’s Going On’.

His solo work draws from the theme of futuristic uncertainty but instead of adding to the hysteria, True Being utilises his sardonic wit to playfully explore possibilities, subliminally encouraging you to find the same sense of humour. You’ll almost feel comfort in the polyphonic promise that we’re all going to die.

With the same satirically enamouring style as John Grant, Childcare and Mother Mother, True Being did exactly what he set out to do with his latest release, ‘Wrong Love Song’; share a little eccentric love on the airwaves.

Throw away your saviour complex with Justine Eltakchi’s hyperpop single, ‘Demons’.

Justine Eltakchi

If you find that the average perennial pop earworm lacks bite, get acquainted with the teeth in the flawless futurepop earworm, ‘Demons’, by Justine Eltakchi.

After a productive 2020, which saw the singer-songwriter releasing two EPs and six singles, 2021 shows a different side of Justine Eltakchi. Her latest single brings forth a darker, more experimental hyperpop sound that isn’t afraid to lyrically rip right through to the core of suffering as the instrumentals echo the mental instability before the final crescendo that illustrates that breakthrough when the black cloud finally shifts.

Demons is a single that compels the listener to put themselves first and throw away the saviour complex. Considering that there is a fair amount of women out there lusting over serial killers with the belief that they can ‘fix’ them, Demons is an essential track.

Justin Adijanto – ‘Ctrl Alt Delete’ featuring Jessica Gelinas and Voel

Justin Adijanto, Jessica Gelinas and Voel’s latest collaborative 3-track single, ‘Ctrl Alt Delete’, practically lays out the welcome mat to make you feel right at home in the immersive indie RnB pop release.

The radio-ready singles, produced by Jakarta-born producer Justin Adijanto, ooze contemporary appeal by toying with moody and muddy tones and nestling shimmering synths in between. With the RnB infusion manifesting through Jessica and Voel’s vocals and instrumentally through the funk-laden grooves, the potency of the soul parallels the infectiousness of the melodies. The standout track has to be, ‘Crazy’; a highly relatable admission of the mania that comes to the surface when it comes to romantic disparity.

Ctrl Alt Delete is now available to stream via Spotify.

London electro-pop duo ColourTelly released the most relatable single of the year with ‘Paranoid’.

ColourTelly

For their latest single, London-based electro-pop duo ColourTelly explored paranoia in the age of disinformation, as the soft jazzy hip hop tones gently resound, hushed vocals quiescently relay observations of disillusion and distrust. The succinct poise of the vocals in Paranoid allows the message to hit even harder than it would if the lyrics were forcible. You can sense the frustration and exhaustion which manifests when exposed to such relentless pedantic conflict.

Speaking as someone who has heard their fair share of ‘lockdown inspired’ singles, Paranoid is easily amongst the most profound and provoking. Here’s what ColourTelly have to say about the single;

“The lyrics bemoan the confusion of the Covid age. An age where through lack of clear leadership and infinite sources of conflicting information, rational thinking has, in the minds of many, given way to fear. The song asks simply whether in the face of adversity humanity is capable of composure or whether as a species we are too anxious and reactionary to forgo panic buying and other such self serving activities. Is it really the virus we are afraid of or ourselves?”

Paranoid officially released on April 24th. You can check it out for yourselves via SoundCloud.

Perry Michael Allen brings us jazzy old-school groove with ‘Just Like That’

If a career working as a producer, song-writer, arranger, and session man for the likes of Albert King, the Memphis Horns, Wilson Pickett, Boz Skaggs, and Al Green (yep. Read that list again) amongst others isn’t enough for you, let’s add in works on multiple RIAA Certified Gold and Platinum albums, a highly coveted Memphis Blues Foundation ‘Blue Note’ Award, and music licensing to multiple films and TV shows (including ‘House’, ‘C.S.I.’, ‘JAG’, Ally McBeal’, ‘Pulp Fiction’, ‘Munich’, and ‘Mickey Blue Eyes’), and tutoring at the prestigious Berklee College Of Music. That’s one heck of a resume all in itself, except that now, as if by magic, Allen brings us ‘Just Like That’. A mix of Jazz-inspired motifs set over Hip Hop beats and breaks, with – of course – a huge Memphis-inspired feel.

We’ve got old-school TR-808 style electro beats and punching, hard-driven bass, sitting behind some chilled, grooving hip hop-styled vocals, a little funky syncopated guitar fill here and there, and a beautiful piano riff that reprises the Mission Impossible ‘tension’ music, hinting but never quite being a straight lift. The drums and guitar build through the track, until we get proper Stax-style horn fills, a little sax riff here, a clarinet there, building up the track until…too soon…and it’s over. It’s a killer track, all smooth-groove, funky without being over-the-top in that laid-back Al Green/Marvin Gaye kind of way, with a definite jazzy feel but a hugely modern vibe from the beautifully sung, soulful vocal and those Hip-Hop beats. It’s quite simply excellent.

Check out the video for ‘Just Like That’ on YouTube; follow Perry Michael Allen at the Clubhouse on Facebook.
