The outstanding UK jazz artist Chris Weeks tells us all about his upcoming debut EP To Be Frank

As a hugely experienced British jazz session artist who is hugely respected, we find out more about Chris Weeks and swim deeper inside his much-awaited debut 5-track EP set for release on the 1st of July 2023, To Be Frank.

Inspired immensely by the all-time late great American singer and actor Frank Sinatra while telling us incredible stories about his well-travelled career, we are treated to a proper interview with real substance.

Hello there Chris. We appreciate you having a quick chat with us. Firstly, what exhilarates you most about making music and performing live?

Chris: Hello there! No problem at all, it’s a pleasure. For me, my favourite thing is being in the moment with a song. When you aren’t really thinking and you’re just sort of transmitting the story and the feeling of what you’re singing. Your concentration can’t be anywhere else and I find that just electrifying, whether it’s on stage or in the studio. I love that. It’s pure.

How delighted are you about your upcoming 5-track debut EP To Be Frank? We love it and feel like you have really honoured Frank Sinatra in the best way possible.

Chris: Thank you very much! Frank has been an idol of mine throughout my life and I am SO excited to be releasing this record. It’s something I meant to do years ago, but looking back now I’m glad it’s taken me this long…I did an awful lot of recording over the Covid-19 pandemic which gave me a chance to really grow as a singer and the record really benefits as a result.

In terms of the players and production team as well, it’s real champagne stuff. Cody Moss, Mark Fincham, Matt Skelton, Larry Judson…they’re all wonderful, tasteful, intensely classy players and they created a beautiful canvas for me. I’d done bits and pieces with them before, but never like this. It was a huge pleasure to be able to get those boys into a room and the results are magical.

Then to have Claire Martin and James McMillan producing was fantastic. Claire’s one of the best jazz singers in the world and James has got jazz awards coming out of his ears, as well as all his Grammy noms. They were able to add detail and direction that I don’t think anybody else could. So yes, VERY excited!!

Please tell us more about the connection with YouTuber OR30 and your hugely successful song called 100 Years.

Chris: ‘100 Years’ was a project I sang on over lockdown, when I was working as a remote session singer. OR30 found me on a freelancing site and we connected. I could never have predicted the level of success that song has had, but it’s a testament to her beautiful writing and to her fans! It’s still one of my favourite songs that I’ve worked on!

Is there a particular live music venue or festival you have your eye on for the future?

Chris: I’d love to play at Ronnie Scott’s here in London. I’ve played at various other jazz venues around the city, but that one’s still on my list. Aside from that, I’d love to play at Cheltenham Jazz Festival!

Why do you think Frank Sinatra has such a massive influence on your music and what do you love the most about his timeless creations?

Chris: I was introduced to Sinatra at an early age and the first thing to hit me was the noise of the band behind him on songs like ‘New York, New York’. All that brass was huge and sounded super cool to my young ears.

Then, as I started to sing properly, I noticed how easily and classily he phrased passages with the groove. He’s intensely rhythmical, even if most of the time he’s restrained with how he phrases things. I trained as an actor in my twenties and then started to notice how he can fill each vowel sound with emotion and ground it all in the same way that actors have done since the days of Shakespeare. He’s the perfect combination of instinct and refinement. The perfect singer!

What is the best piece of advice you keep deep in your memory when the chips are down?

Chris: One is from Sinatra himself: ‘The big lesson in life, baby, is never be scared of anyone or anything’. Easier said than done sometimes, but a good one to live by! My other big one is ‘Nothing can come from nothing’. So if I have an opportunity, I always try to take advantage of it because if I don’t, I know guaranteed that nothing will happen. Whereas if I do it, even if it doesn’t work out the way I’d planned, something good will come out of it.

Lastly, what do you have lined up for the rest of 2023 and where can we see you live next?

Chris: I’m actually currently playing the lead in a theatre tour here in the UK – I’m playing Buddy Holly in Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story. The tour runs til October and after that, I’ll be playing a series of gigs in support of this EP, which I’m very much looking forward to and to which you’ll certainly be invited!

Be sure to bookmark the 1st of July and follow Chris on his IG for more updates.

Stirred by Life is a self-taught UK-based music creator who started with electronic creations and has since moved into an authentic pop blend served with innovative juices.

The delicate and moving acoustic guitar arrangement and vocals are supported by beautiful violin and orchestral arrangements as the emotions in the song grow stronger. Fallen will be the first track on a concept EP intended to take us on a touching journey from despair, through starting to trust in life again (2nd track), to celebrating newly found love (3rd track) and beyond (4th track).” ~ Stirred by Life

Interview: Ozzie Aguilera tells us more about the debut EP EVOLVING

We had the pleasure of speaking with the incredible Ozzie Aguilera via her car recently and we felt the love. We heard about her new single EVOLVING, her decade-long respect for Kali Uchis and with a cute dreamy air wiggle, we find a lovely human who projects peace and love in an often harsh world.

Hello there Ozzie Aguilera. Thank you for joining us today. What did you have for dinner last night and where in the world do we find you?

Ozzie: Hi! Thank you for having me. I appreciate you and everyone at A&R FACTORY so much! I actually had steak last night. One of my really good friends took me out to celebrate my birthday and the release of my debut EP “Evolving”. It was amazing, but I’m currently in my car. I just finished wrapping up a session at the studio.

Please tell us more about your 5-track debut new release EVOLVING.

Ozzie: “Evolving” is my coming-of-age story. I had a really tough upbringing and I wanted to showcase where I am at right now, on my journey through healing. The healing stage can bring up a lot of different emotions that you may not be ready for, but you’ve got to take the initiative and trust the process. I intend to reassure people from different walks of life that being vulnerable is necessary at times. It’s okay not to be okay, but giving up should never be an option.

If you could perform live with any music in the world, who would it be and why?

Ozzie: Kali Uchis! I would love to work with her one day. I flew down to Houston last year to see her in concert, and she killed it. She’s set to go on her own tour this year, so I’m excited to see miss Kali again. I personally have been obsessed with her for almost a decade now, and It makes me so happy to see her thriving in every single thing that she does.

How would you describe your sound to an alien who has just landed on earth?

Ozzie: I would describe it as a smooth and dreamy air wiggle, haha. Hopefully, he or she is able to even understand me, but I’d much rather perform my leading single from “Evolving” for them.

Do you have any specific goals for the rest of 2023?

Ozzie: I want to step out of my comfort zone and dip into different styles, but I am for sure still going to be releasing music that comes from my heart. As humans, we’re constantly evolving, and I plan on staying true to myself. I want to keep growing as an individual and never take my artistic abilities for granted. I’ve been working towards this moment for many years, and I am so glad that the ball is finally rolling.

What was the last movie you watched?

Ozzie: I am not even going to lie, I couldn’t tell you the last time that I watched a movie. Although, I’m currently binge-watching this show on Netflix “Travelers.” It is so good! I wish we had the ability to time travel.

Last, what hopes do you have for humanity as a whole and do you think kindness is lacking when it’s needed most?

Ozzie: World peace seems far-fetched, but It shouldn’t be impossible. I pray that all of humanity will be at peace one day. Absolutely! Kindness is for sure lacking when it’s needed most. It doesn’t hurt anyone to be a decent human being, there is enough darkness in this world.

Interview: Naia Lika tells us all about her incredible debut single Gas Station Bouquet

After appearing to sing in her Mother’s womb, Naia Lika sat down with us recently and we had a chat about her upcoming new release which drops on the 10th of February called Gas Station Bouquet. Eloquently inspiring and showing us what it takes to do what you love, we found out more about singing in the choir, self-awareness, and what it was like living all over the USA.

Hello there Naia Lika. We appreciate you having a chat with us. Where in the world do we find you and what do you usually have for breakfast?

Naia Lika: Hi! I am so excited to connect with you guys. I’m currently living in Los Angeles and I hate to disappoint, but I’m actually not a huge fan of breakfast food. It’s been a weird thing about me since I was a child. My parents would get so mad at me because all I ever wanted for breakfast was a sweet treat, like an ice cream sundae or brownie or something.

Do you feel like you were destined to be a musician after appearing to sing in your Mom’s womb?

Naia Lika: Growing up, music always felt right. My parents put me into dance, vocal lessons, singing groups, and theater – it was all I had ever known. In high school I spent most of my time in choir, musical theater, and doing classical singing competitions; I had always felt so confident and sure of myself and where I stood in my art. I ended up attending the Boston Conservatory at Berklee for musical theater and that was the first time in my life where I wasn’t sure if I was in the right place. I decided to drop out and I experienced this really confusing transitional period. At first, I was convinced I wanted nothing to do with music. I distanced myself as far as possible from it; I almost felt ashamed to even be associated with that part of my life. It wasn’t until the pandemic hit that the boredom made me pick up my guitar again. I was lacking a community during COVID and I started using songwriting as an outlet to explore my thoughts and emotions.

It took me about two years to find a sound that I really resonated with. I put thousands of dollars into an entire album that I have no plans of releasing. In the moment, I was so proud with the work, but after really taking a step back, I realized it didn’t feel true to me or the sound I wanted to create. I went on to do another project and that’s all the music that will be released this year.

Art is all I have ever known, whether that be through music, photography, movement, or any other creative endeavor I dip my toes in. I don’t know exactly what my ultimate destiny is because we can never know, but I do know it will for sure be something where I hold the power to create and express myself through art – I will make sure of that.

Please tell us all about your debut track Gas Station Bouquet which is due to drop on the 10th Feb.

Naia Lika: I’m so excited! The song derives from an eight-song project that was created in August of 2022. I worked with a team of two producers and two co-writers which definitely helped speed up the process. We were completing songs in about 1-2 days each. This song was the second one we wrote and it’s become one of the most special to me. This was the first one that I felt we had actually been able to crack the surface and discover a hint of my sound. The longer we started working on it, the more I felt I could truly resonate with it.

I had spent most of my time during the pandemic writing about traumatizing, heavy topics because I was convinced that music had to be like that. But “Gas Station Bouquet” acted as a catalyst that allowed me to see happy moments with just as much value as “sad” moments. This really built momentum in my daily life; I started to become more present in mundane activities and I learned to appreciate them.

How much of an influence have your parents had in your music career?

Naia Lika: I definitely wouldn’t be sitting here today if it weren’t for them. From the day I could speak, they threw me into a world of music. It became natural for me and I never even questioned a life outside of it for the majority of my upbringing. They had always expected it from me, which I blindly followed.

It wasn’t until I hit college where I started to gain self-awareness. I learned to question myself and challenge my beliefs. Doing so gave me the space to realize that I wasn’t in the right place. When I dropped out of college, they were so upset with me. My dad could barely speak to me because we all assumed I would never touch music again. Like I said earlier, though, the pandemic forced me to pick up my guitar again and I haven’t stepped away from music since. For the first time in my life, I actively made the decision to engage in my art without any external factors telling me to do so.

My dad actually ended up convincing me to do my first artist project after hours of arguing. I wanted to make that decision for myself without being pushed to pursue it, since songwriting had become something that was mine and only mine. I gave it a lot of thought and went through with it and fell in love with the entire process. This is a side of the entertainment industry I had never gotten to experience before because I had been immersed in theater and the classical side of things my entire life. I’m so grateful I took the leap. This space feels right for me.

Creating the song was an impactful moment for me. I had just experienced one of the toughest years of my life and it was such a valuable opportunity to actually sit down and write about something positive in my life amidst all the negativity swarming my mind. I don’t think I take enough time to appreciate what I have in my life.” ~ we love how inspiring this quote is. Have you found that by making music, your mind had calmed down from your tough experiences?

Honestly, at this point in my life, I think it’s made me more anxious. I used to be really good at avoiding the spiraling thoughts that constantly swarmed my mind, but songwriting doesn’t let me do that. Creating art forces you to face everything going on inside, which can definitely be overwhelming at times. I’ve really been digging deep and culminating in a force of self-awareness for over three years now, but it’s not a linear process. I sometimes have the tools I need to calm my mind as I write, but at other times, it feels like I have lost all my tools and allow my songwriting to exacerbate the chaotic thoughts until they become too much to deal with. I think it’s a learning process. Taking a step back to write about your life and experiences can be extremely eye-opening and I think it’s important to have the resources to take care of yourself when something challenging may come up.

You’ve lived in Las Vegas, Michigan, Boston, Hawaii, Vegas again, and Los Angeles. Do you feel like these experiences have broadened your mind?

Naia Lika: For sure. I grew up in a decently conservative area in Michigan where my beliefs did not align with the majority of people I was surrounded by. I felt so isolated and alone here; people were so shallow and surface level that any ounce of emotion I showed was considered “sensitive” and “crazy”. Boston was a complete 180. There, I was able to discover my bisexuality and flourish in an environment that let me be unapologetically myself. I moved to Hawaii, where I had to come to terms with my mistakes. Hawaii is an overly colonized kingdom where native people are fighting for their land every day as they get pushed to the streets. Los Angeles is now where I call home. It’s a place that has re-opened my eyes to a world of motivation and drive, something I was lacking in Las Vegas. The environment here is constantly pushing forward and I honestly love it so much.

Last, what do you hope for humanity to learn after all that has happened recently?

Naia Lika: That’s such a big question and it’s so difficult to pinpoint one thing. I don’t like to sit around and wish for things to be different because I was taught that wanting something to be other than “what is” will only bring you suffering. However, I am also a firm believer that we must stand up and speak out against the things that need change. I think mainly, I want humanity to learn to care for others: other people, other animals, other environments, and the earth they walk on. The issue here is people that who didn’t grow up with love and care often can’t emulate it because they didn’t have the opportunity to receive it. I wish I could make everyone children again and teach them that the world is a safe and good place, but you can’t change people’s past. And unfortunately, sometimes people’s past affects everyone’s future.

Niky Pasolini has unleashed her illuminating indie dream-pop single, Light On

Alt-Indie singer-songwriter, Niky Pasolini, will release her debut album, Update, on January 20th. We were lucky enough to get a sneak preview of the standout dream-pop single, Light On; from the first ring of the alt-90s guitars and bleeding Shoegazey vocals, we were hooked into the vulnerably delicate self-produced hit. With engrossing reminiscence to Sixpence None the Richer in the guitars and the sense of sentimentality Light On is as illuminating as the title alludes.

The London-based artist wrote, created and recorded the entirety of the album in a makeshift studio in her basement to provide a refreshing antithesis to the extensively produced plastic pop that does little more than scratch at the superficial surface lyrically.

Light On will be available to stream with the rest of Niky Pasolini’s debut album, which documents her coming-of-age story, on January 20th via SoundCloud.
