El Gato Del Rio Reinvent Talking Heads’ Classic “Psycho Killer” with their Latest Release “Psycho Killer”

El Gato Del Rio has been responsible for some incredibly inventive original works in the past few years, but with their latest release they’ve reinvented a classic. While they haven’t moved all too far from the original version of “Psycho Killer” by Talking Heads, there’s still a fair enough serving of distinction to allow you to fall in love with the chaotic intensity of the single once more.

Their Southern Americana Folk style allowed Psycho Killer to resonate with a new whisky-soaked filthy tonality, and yes, the vocals are expressive and dynamic enough to match up to David Byrne’s.

MRCL.X Release Video For “1st LuV -Sweet Dreams MASHUP”

It’s always fun to see artists we love cover the artists they love, but many believe you can never truly replace an original piece of work. This said, the advent of DJ culture brought up the concept of bringing pieces together for a new, unique spin on old works. MRCL.X has found that taking the idea of a Mashup and applying it to more traditional songwriting as opposed to a mixture of two songs played simultaneously through samples and crossfading. With this idea in mind, we’re treated to an original song that trails off into the Eurythmics classic Sweet Dreams.

1st LuV tackles heavy feelings with dark sensibility to performance while the music is genuinely neutral –sounding in tone, leaving heavy contrast that emphasizes the ghastly vocals and evocative subject matter. To top off the haunting verse, the familiar lyrics come through to sing us a chorus from the past that has been done more than once for a radio hit, but never like this. To say it leaves an impression is an understatement. This mashup is worthy of the source material it uses and truly found art in the synergy of combining original and covered art.

Ripe is a Funk/Pop band out of Boston, MA that was born as a result of its seven members’ uniting over one belief: with enough passion and honesty, music can still make the earth shake. With one eye looking back to the inception of both funk and psychedelic music, and the other looking forward with a modern concept of what makes people move, Ripe seeks both to honor musical history as well as to make it. Robbie says, “We picked the song because we love the song. We’re not really concerned with the style of music as long as it has oh-shit-moments for us, and that song feels like one extended ecstatic release. We wanted the music video to communicate what we feel like are our oh-shit moments, which to us come from the energy we have between each other, and then the energy between us and the crowd at a show. Basically those moments where the feeling of love is so strong you can almost reach out and touch it, where the energy is so electric it feels tangible. We think that feeling is what we have to offer, regardless of what genre of music you come in liking. This is us tapping you on the shoulder and inviting you to join us in the moment.”
