Cami Bex owns her lack of impulse control in her matured bubblegum pop earworm. Cut Me Off

There was no forgetting the pop-archetype-smashing artist, Cami Bex, after hearing her debut single, Type, in 2020. In 2022, she is on even more visceral form with the release of her seminal single, Cut Me Off, which is a playfully resonant admission to her lack of control in the face of temptation.

A chorus of, “I’m not strong enough for you, you better cut me off”, was always going to hit hard. But when those bruising words are delivered through Cami Bex’s signature bubble gum pop vocals, they hit twice as hard.

The Sydney Southwest-based artist has been worthy of viral notoriety from the start; we can’t wait to watch more hype garner around the sheer vulnerability in her indie breathy vocals and her hooky melodies.

Nikkita prescribes optimism in her debut EDM pop hit, Looking Up

From the suburbs of Perth, the breaking EDM pop artist, Nikkita delivered her internationally resonant synth-driven debut single, Looking Up. Usually, there is a compromise between evocative power and sonic momentum in the pop genre; Looking Up finds the perfect balance of optimistic vulnerability and sheer perennial pop earworm potential.

Debut releases don’t often come as euphoria-inducing as Looking Up, which uses dizzying crescendos and massive future bass breaks to remind you of the visceral sensation that comes as a consequence of finding the freedom in optimism. Yet, I do not doubt that Nikkita’s vocal timbre would be as enlivening in acapella. She has everything it takes to become the next big pop sensation; with plenty of material in the pipeline, she is one to watch.

With his velvety vocal harmonies, narratively romantic lyrics and stellar musicianship, you’d struggle to find another breaking artist as swoon-worthy as Australian-Thai newcomer Gabe Watkins. His sophomore single, Blue Skies, is the epitome of indie-pop perfection; with the throbbing synth lines and high-octane sonic guitars tamed into accordance, you couldn’t ask for a sweeter chilled playlist staple. The emotion he pours into his second single keeps you hooked while the melodies keep it mellow. The emboldening post-breakup single reminds you of our capacity to only see grey even when the sun shines if we are in the presence of someone that leaves us uncontented to the point of torment.

With the same gripping, soulful eminence as Shania Twain, Celine Dion and Maria Carey, up and coming Australian singer-songwriter Kristin Venae’s latest single, Still Here, is simultaneously a hit of nostalgia and a refreshing blend of soul, pop and indie rock.

You’d be hard-pressed to find more stunning guitars in a pop single; the jangly effervescent notes give Still Here a sweet psychedelic kick while Venae’s vocals pay ode to everlasting love. Lizzie Hosking sends us grooving back to the 70s with her latest pop single, ‘Lose My Mind’.

After making an unforgettable 2020 debut, Adelaide’s quickly ascending pop artist Lizzie Hosking has amassed a loyal fan following with her reflectively poignant lyrics and her soulfully funk-infused instrumentals that send you grooving back to the seventies while you listen to Hosking bring in a new era of pop.

Her latest single, ‘Lose My Mind’, starts with an ethereal ballad-style intro before the acoustic instrumentals lace the soundscape with enlivening melodies that allow Lose My Mind to unravel as a feel-good feat of pop. Even if you spent all day listening to the radio, you would struggle to find better instrumentals in a contemporary pop track. Even the most pretentious music fan in your life couldn’t turn their nose up to the delicious guitar licks in Lose Your Mind.

Finding the perfect balance of accessibility, authenticity, and energy is no easy feat for emerging pop singers eager to get their sound into as many ears as possible but Cami Bex has it down to a fine art.

‘Falling for a Star’ is the latest single released by the Sydney-hailing artist who creates to process the world around her. It’s safe to say that if listeners reach past the infectious melodies to invest in the lyrics, they’ll also get to learn from Cami Bex’s all too relatable introspection. The single is a soulfully demure reminder to not be in love with merely the idea of being in love; a red flag is a red flag.

Damian – gentle melancholy with ‘Can’t Have You’

Continuing this week’s theme of hot Australian artists come singer-songwriter, actor, and model Damian. Performing since the age of 8 in one form or another, Damian is perhaps best known for the TV series ‘Deep Water’ and indie film festival shorts ‘The Paper Rose’, ‘Pepper’, and ‘Absolutes’, and for his debut single ‘Perfect To Me’.

Damian now returns with follow-up ‘Can’t Have You’, a delicately picked acoustic guitar-and-vocal paean to unrequited love in the balladic style of early Ed Sheeran, James Bay, Lukas Graham, or Hozier. It’s gentle, soulful, and melancholic in that ‘wistful hopefulness’ sort of way that adds a dash of sad world-weariness without ever slipping into melodrama or schmalz. Damian’s voice lifts and falls but carries that sense of longing and desire atop the graceful picked guitar chords and backing; it’s a beautiful pairing.

With her relatable brand of served-from-the soul Pop, The Aussie singer songwriter is already exhibiting her ability to orchestrate evocatively enticing feats of contemporary hits with chart-topping potential. The synth-led soundscape gives ‘Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking’ a bubble gum Pop feel, but there’s no ignoring the sonorous maturity which oozes from this stylistic release.

Aussie Pop artist Cami Bex’s debut single Type is a melting pot of smooth grooves and empoweringly sultry lyricism which defies convention.

While some artists think that they need to be misandrists or crass to create feminist Pop hits, Cami Bex chose to utterly own her sexuality with some tongue-in-cheek attitude. And there’s even deeper lyrical context if you look past the flirty vibes. Type offers a nuanced assurance that even if you are messed up, you’re someone’s idea of perfection. If we’re all being a little honest with ourselves, we all need to hear that from time to time.

With producer Jordan Leonard on-side for her debut, Type was never going to fall flat. We’re stoked to hear what comes next.

Eamonn Conor – Dig Deeper: Feverously High-Octane RnB Pop

If you can’t take a trip to the ocean, up and coming Pop artist Eamonn Conor’s latest single “Dig Deeper” is the next best thing. The resolvingly oceanic Pop hit kicks off with a tenderly reassuring intro before the aural waves break and suddenly, you’re immersed in the high-octane feverously passionate production.

The Australian artist could easily fill a stadium with their all-consuming sound which is bound to be a hit with any fans of artists such as Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber. But unlike many Pop artists, Eamonn found enough space in the soundscape to stamp down his signature sound. If artists climbed the Pop charts on the merit of their vocals alone, you’d find Eamonn’s name right at the top. The unfaltering nature of their flawlessly extended harmonic howls is enough to make your soul quiver.
