From the first crash of cymbals to the mesmeric outro, the instrumentals behind Ami Leigh’s second single “Dark Soul” will leave you enraptured. It’s not all too often that you stumble across soundscapes which simultaneously offer dark atmospherics and concordant light textures – yes, I’m incredibly aware that sounds like a massive contradiction. Ami Leigh’s vocal style amplifies the amount of resonance found within the single, because instead of trying to prove vocal strength or range, Ami Leigh uses a sense of fragility and honesty. There’s no guise or clever effect for the vocals to hide behind. Yet, as much as I loved the single, it was easy to feel that it could have been slightly shorter with less repetition of some of the lyrics. That’s not to say we didn’t appreciate the poignant energy behind this single.
