Emma Hunter portrayed vices as death incarnate in her cinematically western score, Morire

Never one to shy away from emotionally deep conceptuality, singer-songwriter, loop artist and instrumentalist Emma Hunter always leaves a profoundly artful impact with her lyrical themes that exhibit the darkest facets of the human experience.

After being introduced to her superlative talent via her music video for Here I Go, which narrated the disjointed monologue of a domestic abuse victim, it was hard to imagine a more sobering orchestration. Her latest tour de force, Morire, is an achingly succinct exposition of how our vices are the death-incarnating reapers. Especially for the way they allow the people around us to watch us as we get torn away from ourselves while being too numb to feel the cuts of the scythe.

With everything written between the lines and the Tarantino-ESQUE Western score amplifying the wrenchingly cinematic intensity, you can be damn sure I shed a few tears before working out how to do this filmic masterpiece justice.

Videographer Matt Trevor-Roper, undeniably succeeded in bringing the concept to raw life. Less of a run-of-the-mill music video and more of an epic short film, Morire, is a testament to Emma Hunter’s evocative chanteuse vocal harmonies that effortlessly gel with her flamenco guitars.

Morire released on March 16th; watch the official music video on YouTube or add it to your Spotify playlists.

Love Is A Lie: Eka Laki wants to move on forever with I Give, You Take

Taken from her bilingual looper-filled 9-track debut album In my reality and with eight music videos on the way, Eka Laki shows us that splendidly real Pharrell Williams, James Blake, and Rosalia-inspired energy on I Give, You Take.

Eka Laki is a Cologne, Germany alt-pop singer-songwriter who performs in both English and Georgian with RnB, afrobeat and EDM all wonderfully fused together.

Eka relaunched her career in 2018. Over the next four years, she released seven singles, created covers on Twitch, and directed her music videos. In 2019 she participated in a contest for female songwriters and won a trip to a songwriting school at Musikmakarna in Sweden.” ~ Eka Laki

After feeling her buttons pushed and fed up with the toxic situation, the barefooted angel Eka Laki wonders if the ex-lover actually gave a damn. Sensing the denial and fake love showered in like a bee sting, she looks for that reinvigorated liveliness to wrap around her cold heart like a hot shower after being stuck in a freezing lake.

I Give, You Take from Cologne, Germany alt-pop artist Eka Laki is a reborn single for anyone who needs to move on from the past. Produced with raw frankness and projected as a light away from the dark corner of doom, we find a tremendously insightful single to embrace for its genuineness.

When you feel like your body has been used for all its previous compassion, it’s best to move on.

Raise the Vibrations with Wavier

After numerous releases in 2022, including “Mega Drive IV,” “Wave Length,” and “Columbine,” Wavier is out with a new EP titled “Planet 3000,” an ambitious six track hip-hop romp through sci-fi themes and expert audio production. While there is certainly more than just one gem on this playlist, the song I most want to talk about is track three; “Frequency.”

Right from the get-go, I’m loving the sound of the 808 bass giving a foundation to the mysterious and almost video-game like synth loop – background vocals intricately woven into the fibers of the track are great ear-candy. The vocals, while catchy, do suffer from the modern plight of auto-tune overuse. This isn’t to say that It’s too much of a detraction, Wavier clearly has the chops in rhythm and inflection to give a captivating performance. It’s just that while I’ve said it before, it may be that my ears are old when it comes to the new standardization of vocal FX.

A quick jaunt over to Wavier’s Facebook page reveals a cache of video-links, merchandise, and announcements from the artist. It’s a great repository for getting to know all about the man behind this great music. Additionally, you can find a link to 3000audio.com (his label) which features like-minded artists, just in case you haven’t drank your fill.

Agaaze interview on A&R Factory: Making music For You

Showing us how powerful optimism and hard work combine rather beautifully, Agaaze kindly sat down with us recently to chat about his classical upbringing, tasty berries and how grateful he is to do what he loves on For You.

Hello there Agaaze. Thanks so much for chatting with us here at A&R Factory. Please let us know where in the world you are today and what do you usually have for breakfast?
Agathya: Hey A&R, thank you so much for giving me this opportunity, I’m truly grateful 🙂 My name is Agathya Visveswaran, and I work under the artist name “Agaaze” (Instagram: @agaaze). I am 20 years old and was born in Rochester, New York. I currently attend the University of Michigan, so right now I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan. For breakfast each morning I usually have a protein shake- 2 cups almond milk, 2 scoops vanilla whey protein, and a couple of handfuls of berries (gains!)

Please tell us how the creative process worked while making your new project, For You?
Agathya: “For You” actually started based on a real-life experience. In early 2022, I went on a date with a girl, and she just so happened to be wearing a red dress that night. The night was calm, and nothing really came of it afterwards, however, the vivid imagery of ‘the pretty girl in the red dress’ really struck a chord with me. A couple days later I was working with a simple 4-bar loop of music that I made, and, in basically one-sitting, I wrote the entirety of “Cinnamon Paradise” over that loop. I had always wanted to write a love album, and in that moment, I knew I was ready. I expanded upon the theme and setting of “Cinnamon Paradise” and, like a kid in a sandbox, I basically just let my imagination run free. I thought about my past experiences, what my future might be, and really dove deep into thinking about everything in my life that I loved. I went on to conceptualize the full story and write down almost all the lyrics to the entire album, before I made the rest of the music. “Cinnamon Paradise” was released as the only single off “For You”, and I still find it really cool how I was able to take just a couple hours of my life and turn it into an entire album.

What kind of music/which artists did you listen to while growing up?
Agathya: I listened to all kinds of music growing up- my mom used to play an Indian guitar-like instrument called the ‘veena’, and my dad was a jazz drummer. I started learning classical guitar at the age of six, and because of my guitar teacher’s unique music taste, I was exposed to a lot of Flamenco and Brazilian guitar pieces. As I got older, I started listening to a ton of rap. Besides Kendrick Lamar, I mostly listened to old-school hip-hop/90s rap, as I was drawn to the lyricism and poetry over anything else. The biggest shift in my music taste came when I discovered Tame Impala right before my senior year of high school (in 2019). I was blown away by the intricacy and attention to detail that he brought to electronic music. This opened me up to a whole new world of digitized and production-based music, and I started enjoying artists such as Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky and Tyler, the Creator. Now, I truly enjoy everything. I started a new routine at the beginning of 2022 where I try to listen to at least one album that I haven’t heard before every single day, and I’ve been fairly consistent with that so far.

How did you get started in music and have you been involved in other projects before?
Agathya: As previously mentioned, I started learning classical guitar at the age of six. I would go on to take lessons in jazz guitar, the trumpet, and even in South Indian Carnatic vocals. I have performed guitar at various venues in Rochester, such as the Rochester Jazz Festival and Rochester Lilac Festival, and even played live on WXXI radio in my junior year of high school. I didn’t start making my own music until my freshman year of college. I started releasing music under “Agaaze” in early 2021, and released my debut 7-song EP, “A Portal Inside” in December of 2021. I haven’t looked back since. Agaaze is a solo project, as I
take care of writing, recording, producing, and mixing all on my own (with the help of my friend Zach, @zachwallismusic, for my final master’s)

How do you approach everything needed to be successful in life and in your chosen career?
Agathya: In terms of my approach to life, honestly, it’s just trial and error. I do my best to always pursue what I love, give it my 200%, and then use my mistakes to learn and grow as a person. In terms of success as an artist, it’s a little tougher because success is very subjective. Some may say that I’m unsuccessful because of how many streams my music gets, or how much money I’ve made from my music. Others might say that I’m successful simply by having the courage to release my own music. I guess I try to find a happy medium between the two, to where I’m proud of myself for releasing music, but also maintain my drive to hustle and promote it. At the end of the day, I will never let a thirst for material success influence my art. I plan on graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree that is not music related, so I can support myself financially until, hopefully one day, I can make music for a living.

If you could change anything about the music industry, what would it be and why?
Agathya: In an ideal world, creativity and uniqueness would result in more success in the music industry. Unfortunately, I don’t think that will ever be the case because, money is the name of the game in business. Apps such as TikTok are cool for helping some independent artists, but they drive many others to use a formulaic approach, just for a shot at 15 seconds of fame. This results in the oversaturation of the same type of music, which sucks. If I can maybe inspire just a couple other young artists out there to create art that’s true to them, instead of making music for money and clout, that would be amazing.

Last, what advice do you have for new musicians just starting out in this fickle game?
Agathya: My advice to other artists is to make music from a place of love. As the great Rick Rubin emphasizes, ‘you are the audience’. Create art that you resonate with, enjoy, and love, so that when you look back, you can be proud of yourself for all you have accomplished. Doubt and fear live rent free in my head. I try not to think of what other people might say, or whether I will ever be able to make a comfortable living off my music. It’s an impossible task. Yet, when it’s 5 AM- the birds are quiet, the world is still, and I’m all alone in my room, listening back to what I have been working on all night… a gentle smile comes across my face. Hell, sometimes even tears, because I just fucking made that. For a couple seconds, all my worries wash away. Make music For You.

Spotlight Feature: Glimpse Behind the Scenes of Gated Estates’ Agitated Art-Rock Debut Single, A Letter, with the Live Studio Music Video

Breaking out of the Brecon Beacons, Gated Estates released our favourite debut single of the year with their agitated art-rock release, A Letter. Now, there is a glimpse of how the single was orchestrated; no magic was lost in the live studio version.

The video filmed in their home studio within rural wales provides a voyeuristic view of the gently tensile keys artfully pushing against the angular notes spilling from a Fender Jazz Master while the synths and loops in the background complexify the soundscape to create an alchemic exemplification of music that is greater than the sum of all parts. Christmas came early for the Neil Halstead fan in me as each guitar note transfused choral reverb into the single while the lyrics and vocals resounded with amplified ephemeral grace.

Just when I thought I couldn’t love Gated Estates more, they gave a bird’s eye view as they pulled the rabbit out of the proverbial hat in the compassion-encompassing single that navigates the bitter-sweet relationship between our present selves and our inner child.

Usually, music can only resonate with a subset of people that have experienced certain dynamics. As we have all grown from innocent vessels with naïve views of the world and optimism for the paths we will walk, A Letter speaks to everyone.

We can’t wait for the intellectualism bound to ensue from their sophomore release.

Watch the live studio video for A Letter, which premiered on December 9th on YouTube.

Captain Lo-Fi reached the serotonin-spilling pinnacle of feel-good music with his genre-fluid hit, ‘Joker’

With eccentrically sweet vocals that will instantaneously steal the hearts of any Modest Mouse and Grandaddy fans over some of the most genre-fluid instrumentals that you have ever heard, Captain Lo-Fi’s seminal single, Joker, is almost tear-jerkingly sweet.

The Germany-hailing musician and producer has been fine-tuning his sound in his own studio since 2013, working with artists from various genres and producing beats for artists and companies, including Loopmasters.

This goes a fair way in explaining the organic ease of the experimentalism in Joker, which throws all sense of pretence to the wayside to deliver funky, indie hip-hop-meets-pop instrumentals that his sunny-side-up vocals drift above. Creating authentically ‘feel-good’ music is no easy feat, but Captain Lo-Fi’s willingness to let his endearingly pure soul spill across his productions allowed him to reach the serotonin-spilling pinnacle.

Marc Ambrosia is over sentimentialism in his devilishly clever post-breakup single, Cold Shoulder

Born and raised New Jersey native Marc Ambrosia created the breakup track to end all others with his latest single, Cold Shoulder, which captures the sweetness of freedom in the spicey lyrics which go in the opposite direction of sentimentalising.

With resonantly devilish lines such as “Misery loves company, but I hate that you’re so close to me” and “too much of a good thing, was it any good at all? you can’t help but fall in love with his realist uninhibited candour.

With the same fiery energy of Pat Benatar’s Hit Me with Your Best Shot in the chorus, the intricately bluesy rock meets power pop single is a surefire way to pull anyone out of a self-pity pit. His lyricism is god-tier level, and his hooky instrumental loops aren’t far behind that celestial plateau.

Catch Cold Shoulder on SoundCloud and await the third LP, EDGE, which is set to drop on October 28th.

GIFTED rocks Afropop with hip hop in his latest single, Mr. Oh No

Afropop rocks with hip hop in the up-and-coming artist GIFTED’s latest single, Mr. Oh No, which brings the best out of his trademark lyrical hook, which any of the Canadian artist’s fans will know to be “oh no, oh no”.

It sounds simple, but with the soul that GIFTED pours into his vocal delivery, it is an efficaciously ensnaring feat of vocal melodicism that proves why the young luminary hasn’t failed to rack up in excess of 50k streams with some of his releases that are all about the warm melodic loops and the vibes which prove that conviction doesn’t need to be synonymous with aggression.

Mr. Oh No officially dropped on September 22nd; check it out on Spotify.
