There are very few Indie Soul tracks this year as passionate as Moniah’s latest track Borrowed Wings. Not that I’ve heard that many Indie Soul tracks for that matter. But Moniah may just have the voice to bring the genre back into the mainstream and steal the limelight from the plastically produced Pop artists. Her ethereally compelling vocals mixed in with the almost shoegaze guitar driven-sound create a quite literally chilling effect. Through the dominance of Moniah’s vocals the instrumentals & backing track barely got a look in. It is in the spaces around the vocals pierce you with the soaring reverb bleeding from the guitar. I would have loved to hear the guitar on the track having more time to breath and lock you into the fluidity of the progressions. Also, as passionate and soulful as the vocals were, it didn’t seem as though the lyrics were written to their full poignant potential, I would have loved to hear some raw organic emotion riddled into them. Borrowed Wings is still quite possibly the most stylised contemporary Alternative RnB tracks out there thanks to the experimentally conceptual guitars.
