It’s easy to see why up and coming R&B Pop artist LENOIR has been able to attract such a hype around his ambiently cathartic approach to his sound. His “HIGHSEXMUSIC 1/3” EP was the first release of 2019, and we’re sure we’re not the only ones hoping it’s the last we will hear from LENOIR in 2019.
The best introduction to the stripped back ethereally sweet style of LENOIR is the mesmeric hit “NOQUEEN”. Combining ambient Electronica effects with downtempo Hip Hop beats and smooth elements of R&B and Pop, LENOIR was able to ensure that his sound had plenty of commercial potential thanks to the accessibility of the sound. As much as I could appreciate the synergy between the soft vocals and the fluidity of the beat, the vocals came dangerously close to mumble rap. Which meant it was impossible in part to follow the narrative of the lyrics. But that’s not to say that NOQUEEN wasn’t an indulgent hit which hits with plenty of emotion.
