Jay Lamar has got his eye on the girl or rather the girl has got her eye on Jay Lamar. She Like Me is a love song, but in keeping with the rap and hip-hop background that he draws his sounds from, it is direct, challenging and straight to the point, no point beating around the bush…no pun intended. The song runs on a mid-paced hip-hop groove, builds into confident beats, throws in some skittering percussion, electronic motifs around the edge and delivers its message with nothing left to the imagination.
R&B, rap, trap beats, ambient hip-hop and even some unexpectedly soulful pop tones find their way into the proceedings, the song blending sharp edges with laid back patterns under the vocals, and if it wasn’t for the directness and blunt images discussed in the lyrics, it could almost find itself with mass commercial appeal. But this isn’t the world of compromise and Lamar is nothing if not unambiguous in the scenes and scenarios he conjures and it is this balance of some of the smoothest sounds overlaid with the realities of life and the pulse of the street that makes this such a mercurial musical ride.
