It’s inevitable that throughout Esther Van Leuven’s career she’ll hear her vocals compared to the likes of Dark Indie Pop acts such as London Grammar, Lorde and Warpaint. Yet, the up and coming Nottingham-based performer has taken that pensively wounding style and created a soundscape infinitely more resonant with her latest single “Stone”.
Stone was written about the struggles of maintaining a brave face in a relationship even though it’s only a matter of time before façade starts to slip. Whilst not much is given away through the lyrics, there’s a lot to be said for the repetition of “I am stone” in the chorus. There aren’t too many artists who are brave enough to write about mental health as candidly as Esther, but with her humble, raw and honest style and classically compelling arrangements to Stone, it’s more than worth three minutes of your time.
