Even though plenty of Hip Hop artists have fused layers of Jazz into their sound, there are very few who have the ability to make those layers quite as striking as they are in Drills’ single “Born a God”.
Born a God is just one of the singles which you’ll find on Drills’ latest EP “Never Fallin’”. In each of the tracks, Drills flexes their ability to wax lyrical and put together flawlessly immersive beats. Even from the first verse in Born a God, your hit with the realisation that Drills has plenty to say, and he’s going to verse it in perfect meter and rhyme.
I’ve commonly expressed my exasperation when it comes to Rap artists proclaiming to be deities. But Born a God didn’t resonate in the usual self-aggrandized way. Yes, there is a sure enough serving of attitude and dominance in the single, but there was also a sense of humility which was amplified by the delicate piano keys.
I definitely didn’t anticipate Born a God to be an emotive hard-hitter, but Drills left me hooked on their contemporary approach to wit-filled Hip Hop.
