Its always great when music doesn’t quite fit into the already existing generic boxes, that’s the whole point really, that’s how things get to move on. And whilst Self-Indulgence by Direct certainly skirts familiar territory – rap, pop, electronic dance music – it is how these are all warped together that creates something new as the finished article.
With his tongue firmly in his cheek, Direct surfs modern culture, the idea of fame and as the title of the song suggests, does so from a very self-centred position. But it all seems to be done for the right reasons, fun, parody, satire, to put music and the artists that make it under the microscope. Maybe other rappers should take a leaf out of his book. Its fine to take music seriously but when you start taking yourself too seriously thats when the problem starts.
