Ups and Downs: Mcubed makes everything rather clear on Who Am I

Sailing on flight mode and letting his crisp flow guide us into the dreamy clouds above, Mcubed avoids the fake glitz and shows us why the underground has the best music on Who Am I.

Mcubed aka Brandon Johnson is an Atlanta-based, Oklahoma-born indie hip hop artist who grew up rapping with his cousins and hasn’t looked back since.

Filled with inspiration, he continues to intuitively come up with hooks to songs that he writes and records for the world to hear.” ~ Mcubed

Overflowing with confidence and soaked in a self-aware mentality, Mcubed is that electrifying ether through the speaker we all needed to sink deeply into. This is quality hip hop like it should be. There are smooth-as-ice bars here to keep even the most hardened rap cynic happy here.

Who Am I from Atlanta-based, Oklahoma-born indie hip hop artist Mcubed is a thunderous effort made with magnetic proportions many simply can’t comprehend. Laced in a firm fibre that has trigger-inducing raps to learn from, we find a terrific single which is sparked full of a track with excellent written all over it.

Meoni Samir has made his debut with the party rock hip-hop anthem, Party Time

If talent is in short supply in underground hip-hop, presume the Baltimore trailblazer, Meoni Samir, stole it all to create his debut body-rocking hip-hop anthem, Party Time.

East Side or West Side, you will want to move over to Samir’s side after this flawlessly fresh that sets the bar for other up-and-coming artists. The independent, for the time being, rapper pierced pop hooks into the vibrant hit that sets the mood for hedonistic pleasure around the old-school jazzy samples and nuances of RnB.

The polished-to-perfection beats create a solid platform for Samir’s Playboy persona and dynamic bars that consistently switch up in tone and tempo to create a fully rounded release that gets better with every repeat listen. It has all the makings for a staple; after the first hit, you’ll be hooked.

Take a psychonautic trip with Dirt Cookie’s spacey synthwave rap hit, Word Vomit

After the success of his 2022 sophomore album, Peace in the Valley, the up-and-coming alt-hip-hop originator, Dirt Cookie, pulled a fresh antagonistically infectious earworm out of the oven with his latest single, Word Vomit.

After confessing that he doesn’t want to write about sex anymore over spacey synths and purposefully scratchy beats, the psychotropic feat of synthwave rap kicks into a melodic flow, led by his snappy rap verses that throw lyrical curveball after curveball.

There’s no anticipating the direction Dirt Cookie will take while he’s rapping through the droning synthesisers and 8-Bit style instrumentals, and that’s a major part of the experimental success of Word Vomit. The clue is kinda in the title.

As we have no idea what to expect from his next release, especially based on the indie folk hits in his sophomore album, we’re already stoked to hear it. He’s the GOAT of hip hop wildcards.

Word Vomit is now available to stream on Spotify.

Miami hip hop trailblazer, Willie T The Hit Maker, shook up the scene with the dynamic flows in his single, Laugh Now Cry Later ft. Sauce

For his debut single, Laugh Now Cry Later, the Floridian hip hop trailblazer Willie T The Hit Maker collaborated with Sauce to deliver one of the most energetically dynamic rap drops of the year.

The consistently progressive track has already racked up over 27,000 streams on SoundCloud alone. Which comes as no surprise given the strength of the hooks that pull you right into the centre of the blazing track that keeps the vibe high, despite the dark lyrical themes.

Refusing to confine himself to one genre, Willie T pulled his weight bringing in the new wave of hip hop by melding elements of East Coast hip hop and Afrobeat around his lyrics that transpire from his life experiences that would make a monster out of most men.

After being born into the Floridian capital of gang violence, Dade County, Willie T was exposed to violence from the streets and suffered the brunt of domestic violence that had been passed down for generations. Determined to break the cycle, he turned to music to expose the life that beats down many on the daily and prove that there’s always a way out if you refuse to replicate the violence and injustice. We can’t wait to hear the vindication that follows.

Laugh Now Cry Later was officially released on December 2nd. Check it out via SoundCloud.

Dropping a sizzling single which shall reignite the dedication needed to be successful in this wild world, ZoeBoy Oso jumps off the porch and shows us all that he isn’t playing games on the excellent new track Foot Soulja.

ZoeBoy Oso is a Fort Myers, Florida-based indie hip hop artist who drops incredibly bar-heavy tracks to get those bodies moving when needed most.

Solomon Jones released the dualistic hip-hop single of the year with the subversive single, Snowberry

Taken from his album, Glass, the standout single, Snowberry, from the up-and-coming New Jersey-residing hip-hop artist, Solomon Jones, is a lesson in subversive expression.

From a smooth and jazzy prelude that drips pure soul and seduction through the backing vocals around his hushed spoken-word timbre, the track abruptly yet seamlessly takes a drastic turn in direction.

After confessing amorous feelings, Solomon Jones exhibits his dark and “cursed” side before bringing the soul back in, proving that the line between light and dark resides in us all and we’re only fooling ourselves by denying our intrinsically dualistic nature. Sonically, Snowberry is subtle. Yet that didn’t stand in the way of the versatile artist from delivering one of the most impactful hip-hop singles of the year.

The album was released on December 10th; it is now available to stream and purchase via apple music.

Toking up to the max and letting his mind relax, yungrobgoincrazy is in the mood to mingle away from the bad smelling odours which can cause mass brain pollution with his spark-filled new release, The Jetty Jingle.

There’s absolutely “No Reason” to Skip VSN

With a beat that sounds like it comes fresh off an old MPC, VSN’s new track “No Reason” bangs – like it would yesterday just as much as it does today (and probably tomorrow for that matter). With liquid-sounding vocal samples it has a dreamscape quality – then we get to hear the vocals – a bouncy stream-of-consciousness type melodic rap beautifully nested in the mix. I love how restrained the drums are in this track, it’s like when the bass hits there’s a treat for us and they don’t ditch the synths either. “No Reason” is for sure minimalist but at the same time very elegant in its execution.

I was looking through VSN’s (pronounced “vision” because God-help us if we use vowels these days) bio, and it seems he’s a native of Ghana who immigrated to Canada – from the wording, he has primarily been a producer for the majority of his career (which explains the first-rate MPC vibe in his track). His featured artists list reads like a “who’s-who” of current stars and Grammy-nominated veterans of the hip-hop/RnB world.

On VSN’s Facebook we get to see many sides of the artist. From stylish shots of him in fashion-wear with perfectly colour/theme coordinated backgrounds to candid “on the street” looks – he seems like an imposing figure, which is something somewhat mandatory for a life on stage and in charge of musicians. I would be curious to see what he’s like as an individual – hopefully an interview is forthcoming in the future.

Karrell – Mama’s Boy I: Jazzy Grooves, Choppy Flows and Endless Introspection

‘Kid in a Box’ is the debut LP from the up-and-coming hip-hop artist, Karrell, who is making short work of winning fans over with his old-school jazzy grooves, choppy flows and lyricism that brings a whole new level of introspection.

The standout single from the 12-track album, Mama’s Boy I, exposes Karrell’s softer side while establishing himself as an artist that knows how to carry conviction in every bar. The self-awareness in the confessionally narrative release, which can dizzy you with the cadence, absolutely sets the bar for other artists wanting to make an impact on their audience.

With both the intro and outro leaving ample room from cinematic old school samples, there is plenty of room to find yourself in the release after understanding Karrell’s vices, history, talents, and shortfalls that have left to expressive triumph.

Mama’s Boy I was released on December 14; catch it on Spotify.
