Interview: LA’s Lee Adrian drops new blaze-filled single High

Dropping a new track for us to get High inside as its release occurs today, we sat down with the street-wise Lee Adrian to chat more about his career so far and what it takes to survive. Starting off with a playschool recording tape player thanks to his Mom, we find a valiant soul who is ready for anything in life.

Where in the world are you located currently and what would you recommend as a healthy meal?

Lee: I am located in Los Angeles, Ca and my healthy meal of choice would be a nice honey-glazed salmon with asparagus and red potatoes.

What was it like growing up in Houston’s not-so-friendly 5th ward?

Lee: Quick and right to the point huh? Houston has its parts like many other cities in the world. 5th ward is one of those places that most people don’t make it past a certain age. I’ve seen many things in and out of the hood like my mom laying us on the ground at night to avoid any stray bullets in the night to taking the trash out to see a dead body in the dumpster.

How did you get into music and what was the spark that lit your whole career?

Lee: From what I can remember my mom bought me a playschool recording tape player and said that I couldn’t put it down. I took the thing with me everywhere and played nothing but Hip Hop. I would honestly say that my cousin Iman got me into hip hop because she was a bigger fan than myself. I never thought of myself as a rapper before and I wanted to do what she did cause I thought it was cool. A girl rapping and singing at her age was good too? We formed a group and the rest is history.

Please tell us more about your new release which drops on the 6th March, High?

Lee: Man, High has a vibe that will elevate you for sure. It touches on the topic of how I feel before, during , and after I light one up. I get into this creative bag filled with positivity and humbleness. Like you know you the hottest thing since sliced bread but you have to be nice about it? It touches on the way women make me feel, how you can get high off life and love.

Who inspires you to be the best at whatever you do?

Lee: My inspiration stems from me. I put the work in, I get the results. As long as I keep God first and apply the work then that’s all that matters. Because at the end of the day, I make myself happy.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Lee: I live by the quote, “Expect Nothing Appreciate Everything”. Meaning don’t live to much in the past or future, live in the moment and enjoy your journey.

Are there any dope music spots in your local area we should check out?

Lee: Nomadics Studios is a co-working event space in North Hollywood. Studio time, Podcast Rooms and Air Bnb. You can find them on instagram @nomadicstudios.

Last, what are your goals for the rest of 2023?

Lee: I encourage everybody to keep a journal, write their intentions down, manifest what their individual goals are and keep it to themselves. God knows what I want and I can’t wait for you guys to see what’s in store.

NJ Rapper Jay struck gold in his old-school lo-fi hit, Another Man’s Treasure

The NJ hip-hop artist running his feverishly witty bars under the mononym, Jay, turned up the heat by cooking with old-school flavour in his lyric-driven hit, Another Man’s Treasure.

After a crackling jazzy prelude, the lo-fi chill-hop hit kicks into full swing under the evocative duress of Jay’s vocal delivery which puts even more emotion into the compelling lyricism that paints a grim picture of systematic racial violence and oppression.

There are few opening lyrics as cutting as “this game wasn’t made for the darkest of brothers”. From there on out, the lyricism makes even fewer bones about holding a blood-stained mirror up to society, allowing it to see what it has become.

Another Man’s Treasure will officially release on March 3rd. Hear it on YouTube and SoundCloud.

Alex Caban embraced the future of Afrobeat Hip-Hop with ‘Anything’, featuring Jessica Peros

Brooklyn-based Hip-hop and Afrobeat fusionist Alex Caban is in fiery fresh form in his latest visionary EP, Love Letters. In the standout single, Anything, dark, moody, and future-ready electronica motifs collide with more evocatively inclined instrumentals to balance soul and scorn; the lyrical interplay between Caban and the featuring artist Jessica Peros amplifies the evocatively torrid gravity of the release to the nth degree. If there is any track that alludes to the danger of limerence, it is this consistently evolving narrative of insecurity, jealousy and passion.

With Jessica Peros’ Lady Gaga-Esque sultry vocal lines against Caban’s rapid-fire canter that will leave heads in a rhythmic spin, Anything is an impassioned triumph that makes no bones about alluding to how deep emotions run. Instead of scratching the surface, the lyricality of Caban’s emotionally-rounded triumph digs affectionately deep.

With meta lines such as “You’re not an astronaut, so why are you needing space”, the stellar production and the sonic distinction, you can consider Alex Caban a triple-threat.

Canadian hip-hop heavyweight YungHarbs is back in the ring with his mixtape, RTL, Vol. 3

After a two-year hiatus, the independent rapper, YungHarbs has shown what the airwaves have been lacking in his absence with the release of his mixtape, RTL, Vol. 3. With bars as sharp, dynamic, and energised as the best of RZA’s work in the opening single, FWM, the mixtape flows from a strong start and never falters through the remaining three singles.

His gritty lo-fi edge encompasses the old-school and the new wave while running through track two, RIGHT AROUND, which throws in Afro Pop and RnB flavour, allowing YungHarbs to stand in a rhythmic league of his own on top of the steady rattle of the 808s.

Track 3, Test Me, brings in the ingenuity of the collaborating artist, T3, the dancehall anthem stands as a testament to the rhythmicality of their bars as the creative chemistry and conviction spill. Before the mixtape ends on WALK, which added a new trajectory to the evolution of gangster hip hop, the viscerally vindictive hit will easily win over any fans of Kanye.

RTL, Vol. 3 is now available to stream on Spotify.

EB seeks sanctuary in his mindfully melodic alt-hip-hop earworm, SECRET GARDEN

American rapper and producer, EB, is disrupting the hip-hop hegemony with his charismatically quirky sonic signature. The Virginia-based artist’s latest single, SECRET GARDEN, is the perfect introduction to his sunny disposition and wholesome bars, which throw away the allusion that every rap track needs to be charged with conviction.

The playful polyphonic Nujabes-ESQUE prelude draws in fans of 8-Bit-adjacent music before veering into a feat of cinematic East Coast hip-hop in the same vein as Jay Z and Nas. In the short and sweet space of 1:39 minutes, EB made sure his audience got their dopamine fix and brought mindful compassion into trend.

“This song is a collaboration with Dale Richman, and within the lyrics, we paint the dynamics of the pain of one-sided relationships, a common theme throughout the project. I produced, mixed and mastered this song to my own standard of perfection.”

SECRET GARDEN is the first track to drop from EB’s upcoming project, Sorta Flying…REMADE~!!!, which is due for official release on February 23rd.

SECRET GARDEN hit the airwaves on February 3rd. Hear it on Spotify.
