Pulling elements of rock and RnB together with cinematic grace is a trait the Sydney soulstress Alexandra is quickly becoming infamous for. Her latest single, Grieve You, is her finest introspective score to date. Alexandra’s artful command over her vocal range is a symphony in itself.
Late one night, the compulsion to greet and say goodbye to her inner child reflectively came to fruition. Resulting in a sombre ode to the lack of closure that we all mourn from the tribulations we endured when we were too young and naïve to advocate for ourselves. Whatever your history, the shimmering reverb in Grieve You around the angular pirouetting guitars is sure to bring some catharsis.

UK singer-songwriter Nick Cody is set to unleash his forthcoming album, All is Fine Until the World Goes Pop; the plaintive piano mockery of the state of our being at this crushing crux of humanity spills its fair share of antipathy while playfully protesting the black mirror reflection of our reality.

Life goes on in JRtheBand’s resilience-driven folk-rock anthem, Lit Boy

In a bid to pour modernism into the rock arena, the Phoenix, AZ-hailing multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, JRtheBand, has launched his latest folk-rock anthem, Lit Boy, and decidedly succeeded.

The complex guitar work entwines the warm timbre of swampy acoustic guitar strings with the sonic overdrive of electric guitar riffs, while the vocals match the powerful instrumental arrangement. Fans of The Levellers will easily get caught up in the rugged anthemics of this narratively powerful release which draws you right into the visceral centre of the expression, which stridently proclaims resilience in a time that premeditates weakness. If you ever needed affirmation that life goes on after tribulation, it is neatly packaged in this vibrant celebration of fortitude.

With an acoustic guitar intro that rings with the same evocative timbre as Neutral Milk Hotel’s Two-Headed Boy before bursting into an art-rock arrangement, AJ Elkin’s indie folk single, Breathe In Breathe Out, is an emotionally-charged extension of sanctity.

The Nada Surf-Esque lyricism that sympathises with the trials and tribulations of the modern age becomes efficaciously consoling against the rugged progressions. The US singer-songwriter clearly has a knack for creating connective music; we can’t wait to see where his compassion and songwriting tenacity takes him – he is undoubtedly one to watch.

Warick Pond picked up the pieces with the aching soul in his single, The Wreckage

Taken from his seminal album, Open Roads, Warick Pond’s standout single, The Wreckage, carries the solemnity of Tom Waits, the contemporary Americana edge of Kurt Vile, and the mellow melancholy of the Verve.

Reminiscences aside, the American singer-songwriter puts his own authentic beauty into aching soul through the resounding quiescence of his guitars, which match the gentle outpour of visceral emotion through his Americana-tinted vocal timbre.

When an artist can create such a profoundly emotional soundscape with minimal production and understatedly passionate vocals, you know that you’ve just come across a one-in-a-million entity. Enduring the agony of hopeless romanticism fleetingly became worth it through the resonance extended by Open Roads, which captures the enduring loneliness of the human condition and how tightly we cling to connections which can turn to past tense in the blink of an eye.

Nick Cody & The Heartache tackled profound uncertainty with their latest single, Maybe, featuring Towse.

Uncertainty seems to be around every corner as of late; one of the only consolations is the latest single, ‘Maybe’, from Nick Cody & The Heartache featuring Towse.

The melodiously mournful single is the third one to be released from the forthcoming album, all is fine ‘til the world goes pop, due for release on September 30th via Green Eyed Records. Instead of sugar-coating future possibilities, the aptly glib lyrics pose possibilities of suffering in silence or hiding in the dark, giving up thinking or ceasing to put up a fight.

As the poignantly melancholic keys coalesce around the warm and gentle guitar chords, grief-stricken alchemy breathes between Nick Cody’s crooned folk pessimism and Towse’s haunted vocal timbre which carries an ethereal chill not all too dissimilar to Angel Olsen’s. They’re a match made in aural heaven. As for this timely single, consider it essential for your alt-folk-rock playlists.
