If you could imagine a perfectly synergetic mash-up of the White Stripes and Queens of the Stone Age, you’d get a pretty good idea of the instantly entrancing single “Understudy” from Andy Marlow.
The Alt Indie Rock hit is just one of the emotively invoking singles from his 2019 album Better Future. Expect big choruses, sticky sweet melodies, and some archaically inviting effects which are sure to enamour any fans of Beach Boys, Beatles, and the Rolling Stones.
Marlow’s vocals switch between quaint and mellifluous to the unrestrained raw dynamics which you wouldn’t be surprised if you heard them in a track from the Strokes. Yet, with his other influences including Jazz, Folk, Dance, and Blues there are plenty of deft experimental touches to Understudy which I can guarantee you won’t have heard the like of before. There aren’t many Indie Alt artists who choose to kick off their guitar-led soundscapes with a sonic blast of synth, but his inventively experimental approach is just one of the reasons you won’t hesitate in adding his hits to your playlists.
