1323’s latest single “Retro Baby” may have plenty of elements from the time of Synth Pop’s inception to lace the sound with accessibility, yet as the single progresses it’s clear that she’s reinvented the soundscape with one of the most distinctive flourishes yet. The fragility in the vocals is matched with moments of arrestive power making 1323’s vocals as powerful as you’d expect from the likes of Warpaint, Angel Olsen, and London Gramma.
It’s a rare feat for the vocals to a synth track to gel as intrinsically as they did with the beat in Retro Baby; the ultimate effect is one of aurally alchemic catharsis. If the fuzzy synths weren’t enough of a nostalgia hit for you, the distorted electric guitar will take you right back with the fierce archaically 80’s licks which bring in the outro.
